Membership Information

Colony Membership
Colony Membership is an important part of the social life at Mountain Lake.  Colony Members enjoy the use of all Colony facilities, including the Colony House (clubhouse and private 36-room inn), the pool and Pool House, Fitness Center, dining facilities, and recreational facilities including golf, tennis, croquet, and skeet.

Applicants for Colony Membership must be sponsored by a current Mountain Lake Member, seconded by a Member, and supported by three other Members.  Final approval for Colony privileges is contingent on approval by the Admissions Committee.

Mountain Lake is a Member-owned community, and upon acceptance into the program and payment of fees (initiation fee, stock purchase, and dues), Colony Members become shareholders in Mountain Lake Corporation.

Mountain Lake – Seasonal Schedule
Mountain Lake is a seasonal club and community.  Founded in 1915 as a winter community, Mountain Lake is a place where residents enjoy an active and congenial lifestyle with friends, family members, and guests during the season.  Although a few residents live at Mountain Lake year round, most are in residence from November through April.  During the off season the Colony House, Pool House, and Golf Shop are closed*, staffing is limited, and no dining facilities are available.  There are no plans to expand to a year-round operation, but rather to maintain the historic character of Mountain Lake as a seasonal club and community.
* Off season schedule:

  • The Golf Shop and 11th Tee snack bar open on October 15th and close on May 15th each season.
  • The Fitness Center is open year round, with a Fitness Director on staff.
  • The golf course and pool are open and maintained year round, but are not staffed during the off season.
  • Tennis and croquet courts are open and maintained year round, but are not staffed during the off season.
  • Administrative staff members work year round.  Some work reduced hours during the off season.
