Historic Colony House, Inc.

Preserving the Past, Protecting the Future

Mission Statement

The mission of the Historic Colony House, Inc. foundation is preservation of the Mountain Lake Colony House.

Preservation of the Mountain Lake Colony House is a priority, and to this end, in 2014 the Historic Colony House, Inc. (HCH) was incorporated as a nonprofit 501(c)(3) public charity.  The purpose of the HCH is to help raise awareness and funds to help preserve the building for future generations.  A volunteer Board of Directors oversees operations of the foundation.  All contributions are appreciated and are deductible to the full extent allowable by law.

Designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, Jr. and built in 1916, the historic Colony House at Mountain Lake is one of the most beautiful and significant historic buildings in Central Florida.  Additional wings were designed by architect Charles R. Wait and added to the structure in 1921 and 1925.  The Mediterranean Revival style structure is the focal point for the Mountain Lake community, one of the oldest planned developments in the country.  In 1991, the Colony House was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.  Features of the Colony House include an entrance courtyard, pergolas, loggias, decorative columns, arches, awnings, cornice details, balconies, balustrades, and casement windows with fanlights.

At Mountain Lake, the Colony House has been in continual use since its original construction in 1916.  Although it has been well maintained, like all buildings, the Colony House requires substantial ongoing maintenance.  In 1995, a major renovation cost approximately $5.5 million.  In 2004, it weathered the three hurricanes which passed through Polk County, Florida – Charley, Frances and Jeanne.  The required cleanup and restoration work at the Colony House was extensive.

A limited number of docent-led public tours of the exterior of the Colony House are being planned, primarily during the months of May through October.  Additional information on tours will be posted when available.
